When I first came to Michigan Tech in 2006, I immediately wanted to get involved in Christian ministry. Coming from a small Christian school background, the opportunities seemed endless at Michigan Tech. Before I knew it, I was involved in countless organizations, none of them inherently Christian. I was still attending church and fellowshipping with Christian friends, but even until a couple years into my time at Tech, I had failed to formally join a Christian ministry.

With the career fair just around the corner, it’s almost the time to polish up the shoes and résumés, dress our best, and head up to the SDC to get that dream job or internship.  However, some may still wonder what plans God may have for them in their lives and careers, when others may seem to have everything figured out.  So, what exactly does God have to say about his plan for our lives?

My first memorable encounter with someone who was passionate about Christ at college was while I was sitting in the ‘Being a Christian on Campus’ orientation session. At the time I was there because I was following the advice of good friend of mine who, after hours of interrogation, only told me that an important aspect of my Christianity in college was to get involved immediately. I figured I should take him up on it, and found myself in the front row of the room.

I can still vividly recall my first days of Orientation and classes as an incoming first-year student to Michigan Tech. Having grown up in a Christian home, school and church, I had no idea what to expect on a secular campus. I remember seeking out a role in several Christian organizations, but for whatever reason, I never found my niche. There were plenty of organizations to choose from, both religious and not, and throughout the barrage of pamphlets and recruitment materials, I eventually settled into several campus organizations, none of them faith based.

Well it was that time of year again, the sun started shining, the snow started melting and everyone started asking, "Hey, where are you going for Spring Break?"  I'd tell them, "Chicago, to lend a hand, meet new friends, strengthen my prayer life, and maybe fit in a nap here and there."  I was talking about St. Martin de Porres House of Hope obviously, a half-way home and women's shelter for those in need, run by Sr. Therese O'Sullivan of the I.B.V.M.  I've never been on one of St.

This was my second year going on the Wisconsin mission trip. Some things remained the same, others were different, but I really enjoyed it. We had a much smaller group this year, which allowed us to get to know each other better. Our first stop was the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse, where we worked with Brother Regis and Sister Dora, sorting donated pant cut-offs to be shipped to Africa and South America. The locals use this fabric to make backpacks, hats, dresses, etc. as a source of income. Their mission succeeds on volunteers and donations alone, which I find very fascinating.

I Agree With John
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Unless you were living under a rock, you  caught the comprehensive “I Agree With John” campaign, organized primarily by Campus Crusade and His House during the week before Easter. Whether you agree with the Gospel message or the methodology of the campaign, it is hard to argue against the effect it had on campus. According to Leslie, a student organizer, “Spiritual conversations happened on campus.  Through ‘I Agree With John,’ thousands of people had thoughts about God that they would not have had otherwise.”

With another semester winding down, once again, we find ourselves transitioning into summer mode.   However, whether taking summer classes, starting that summer internship or co-op, or going home to start a summer job, we can still constantly be sharing our faith with those around us.  Cross Reference would like to recognize several individuals who are using their summer to share the Gospel through various projects around their communities, around the country, and around the world.

This past spring break, God granted me the opportunity to visit Querétaro, México on a mission trip through Campus Crusade For Christ for the third time. Every time has been more amazing than the last. This year I got to reconnect with everyone I had formed relationships with again, continue to help the ministry down there grow, and see God move in a myriad of other wonderful ways.

Once you return from Spring Break, get ready to rock the MUB Commons once again when Children 18:3 and Aiming for Aurora come to town on March 19.

Campus Crusade for Christ and Inter-Christian Council are sponsoring this free concert.

Mark your calendars now for this free event!

The university distribution racks are up and ready to go, and so is Cross Reference. We will be distributing bi-weekly through the end of the semester, and into next school year, encouraging believers and challenging non-believers to establish and maintain constructive spiritual dialogue.

College life provides a unique opportunity for students to explore new things, both in and out of the classroom, and we hope that Cross Reference educates and promotes spiritual engagement.

Spring break is finally here — the long anticipated rest between weeks eight and nine of classes; a time for many to go home to relax, catch up on sleep and spend time with family. For many, it is a mission field, among the friends and family back home who don't yet know Jesus, which is often the most difficult spring break destination, though also the easiest to overlook. For scores of other Michigan Tech students, spring break is a time not to go home, but to go out into the world to serve.

What happened this Winter Carnival? Well, there is the usual: fried Twinkies, sculptures, lots of people and several days off of school. There was also something else going on — the Lord provided fantastic opportunities to outreach all over campus. From being able to do the welcome statue to handing out fudge in the dorms to gospel messages on campus, the Lord moved. The fantastic thing about all of these things is that they were not supposed to happen. Usually the Inter-Christian Council gets a month-long statue that the Christian groups on campus work together on.

I think I can safely that most of us at Michigan Tech have a lot stuff — I know I do. From video games to books to cooking utensils to clothing, and who knows what else, the Lord has blessed us abundantly. I think I can also say that we all hate injustice. Wouldn’t it just be brilliant if we could use the material blessings in our lives to fight the wrongs in our world? Well, actually we can.

Summer takes many different shapes for students — but no matter where they are, there is always a potential for ministry. Whether it be getting industry experience on a co-op, or explicit short-term ministry opportunities, or just hanging out around home, there will always be people who need Jesus.

I can still vividly recall my first days of Orientation and classes as an incoming first-year student to Michigan Tech. Having grown up in a Christian home, school and church, I had no idea what to expect on a secular campus. I became deeply involved with the Michigan Tech Lode as an editor, but I was still seeking to get involved in Christian work. Upon God's leading and encouragement from several others, the idea of a Christian newspaper formed. To make a long story short, after almost a year of planning and recruiting, Cross Reference published its first three issues last semester, and is back this year ready to serve the campus community. This paper seeks to encourage and challenge believers and non-believers alike to openly discuss spiritual matters.

Spring semester may be almost over, but unlike classes, ministry doesn't stop at semester breaks—it just takes different forms.  While most take their ministries to their homes or co-ops for the summer, many students will remain in Houghton for at least part of the summer, and several of the Christian groups will be continuing with Bible studies and fellowship opportunities. His House Christian Fellowship has already announced that they will continue to meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

Mobilization to End Poverty
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

On April 26-29, 2009, a broad and diverse coalition of faith-based organizations, churches and global anti-poverty groups will convene The Mobilization to End Poverty (M2EP)—a historic gathering where thousands of Christians and anti-poverty leaders will engage in a transformative experience of education, worship, community and activism in Washington, D.C.

Hopefully you have enjoyed the first three issues of Cross Reference ever produced. This has been a trial run for us, and with regular website hits on mtucrossreference.com and an active Facebook following, plus evidence for almost all of our 500 print copies being picked up each issue, we are confident that this is only the beginning of this unique campus ministry.

Last Saturday, the Wads Annex was filled with singing and other forms of worship, as ICC sponsored “Encounter Worship,” the first of two worship events reaching out to all on campus.

“I have very high expectations that God is/will/and already has used this in people’s lives,” said Ben Aho in Cross Reference’s online exclusive preview to the first event. “It has been awesome to see Him purposefully set things up, on His own terms, and I can only give Him the glory for it.”

Isaiah 58 and Matthew 25 speak of religion as being closely tied to social justice; these passages provide the inspiration for social justice movement on campus and were the theme for Social Justice Week. Social Justice Week is about being sensitive to conscience and taking steps to follow it. Christianity is moving beyond just a personal faith, and becoming a community that is alive and moving in the world - not just believing but doing!

The Weeks of Partnered Prayer (WOPP) were started several years ago by four members from a few of the Christian groups on campus. All four original members were leaders in their respective groups and believed in the power of prayer to have a profound impact on the life of Christians. Those four people had been working within their organizations to create a desire for prayer and had a passion to see the power of God flow though the lives of all Christians for the glory of our Lord.

Intelligent design or chance - that was the topic Saturday, March 21 at the Rozsa Center.  Campus Crusade for Christ sponsored a free presentation by Dr. Randy Guliuzza of the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) on The Reproductive System: Fascinating Evidence for Design.

Panama City Beach, Fla. is one of the most popular spring break destinations in the country. Spring break parties sponsored by MTV, countless nightclubs and a world-class beach scene make Panama City Beach a haven for many spring breakers, but such a scene may not seem like the perfect environment for a bunch of Christian college students to travel to. Or is it? Campus Crusade for Christ thought it was, and the nearly 1,000 students that took part in Crusade's Big Break 2009, including 21 students from Michigan Tech, received a rewarding experience.

"What sort of news will I find here?", you may perhaps wonder. In a nutshell: the news section will consist of a factual reporting of current events. Specifically: our focus will be to report on issues that are of particular interest to Christians, especially topics that are perhaps not found in mainstream media. Examples of such topics include (but are not limited to) global Christian persecution, social injustice, relevant laws and court rulings, and especially local/regional news and events relating to Christians.

The world is not a friendly place for Christians. The Bible assures that those who stand up for their belief in Christ will be persecuted (II Timothy 3:12, Matthew 5:10-12). Rather than being deterred, Christians should be motivated to reach the world with the Gospel (Matthew 28:16-20) because the earth is only a temporary home - heaven is a promised reward for those who have put their faith in Him by admitting their sin (Romans 3:23), believing in Jesus and the eternal life offered through Him (John 3:16-17, Acts 16:31), and confessing and turning from their sins (Romans 10:9).
